The writing is very similar, but the transition is not quite seamless in the minute details. Despite the chronological distance between novels, Hornblower's personality and quirks never change. He grows in experience and maturity, but his core elements never waver from book to book.

To answer Michael's qustion, not as close as I would like. The primary viewpoint is from the Generals and assorted other major players. The perspective of the common soldier is absent. I would enjoy a memoir from a common Continental, but have yet to find one.

Nice review. I read The Killer Angels many years back and enjoy the Shaara's style of writing. In this book, how close does the reader get to the foot soliders view? I mean, is the focus on the Generals and well known figures or do you also get to hear from lower level figures?

I've enjoyed this book so far and hope to finish it soon. It's refreshing to follow a hero in the making and find that he has many of the doubts and misgivings of lesser men. Further, it's just a fun read.

I know Matt read the entire series and was wondering how different Forester's writing is from this book to Beat to Quarters. Although the former is first chronologically in the Hornblower universe, it was written 13 years after Beat to Quarters. If the reader was unaware of this would he notice a change or is the transition smooth between books?

It is based on the letters and public accounts surrounding the events. Much of the dialogue is ad-libbed, making it fiction, but the history and circumstances surrounding the dialogue are historically accurate.
